ST. CROIX
As the largest of the United States Virgin Islands, St. Croix maintains a distinct, colorful history and cultural heritage, unlike that of any other Caribbean island. At 28 miles long and seven miles wide, St. Croix features two main historic towns, Christiansted and Frederiksted. The island’s rich history is evident in its architecture, national parks, historic landmarks, botanical attractions, food, music and traditions. Today, colorful and well-stocked shops and fine restaurants are housed in old colonial structures lining St. Croix’s wide streets. The island’s distinctly 18th-century European architecture reflects a period when seven flags – Spanish, Dutch, British, French, Knights of Malta, Danish and American – flew at different times over the island. Among the island’s highlights include the St. Croix Cultural Heritage Trail, the Cruzan Rum Distillery and the nearby Buck Island, located off the shores of St. Croix and regarded as one of only two underwater national monuments in the United States.
